The short answer is that the hippies won. It's hard for people to remember just how constrained and conformist 1950s America was. All white collar men had to wear a suit and tie to work. Women's clothing was demure and they were expected to be "ladylike." It was both legal and the norm to exclude blacks and Jews from living in "white" neighborhoods.
