राकेश टिकैत के पिता महेन्द्र सिंह टिकैत थे । महेंद्र सिंह टिकैत का जन्म उत्तर प्रदेश के मुजफ्फरनगर जिले में हुआ था। महेंद्र सिंह टिकैत भारतीय किसान यूनियन के अध्यक्ष रह चुके हैं। 1986 में महेंद्र सिंह टिकैत ने ट्यूबवेल के बढ़े हुए बिजली दर को लेकर शामली में आंदोलन किया था। यह आंदोलन धीरे धीरे उग्र होता गया। इसी आंदोलन में पुलिस की गोलीबारी से एक किसान की मौत हो गई तब महेंद्र सिंह टिकैत का नाम राष्ट्रीय स्तर पर हो गया। तत्तकालीन मुख्यमंत्री वीर बहादुर सिंह ने खुद शामली जाकर किसानों के आंदोलन को संबोधित किया। टिकैत के नेतृत्व में कई आंदोलन हुए लेकिन एक आंदोलन ऐसा भी था, जिसे देख मौजूदा केंद्र सरकार तक कांप गई थी। 1988 के दौर की बात है नई दिल्ली वोट क्लब में 25 अक्तूबर, 1988 को बड़ी किसान पंचायत हुई। इस पंचायत में 14 राज्यों के किसान आए थे। करीब पांच लाख किसानों ने विजय चौक से लेकर इंडिया गेट तक कब्जा कर लिया था। टिकैत के बेबाक बोल- 1980 में हर्षद मेहता कांड की वजह से दिल्ली में सियासी घमासान मचा था। उसी समय महेंद्र सिंह टिकैत प्रधानमंत्री पीवी नरसिंह राव से मिलने दिल्ली गए। टिकैत ने सीधे
